On the evening of March 17, 2014, Charles Anderson Richardson, Jr., "Sonny", as he was affectionately known, went peacefully to be with the Lord. Sonny was born on January 13, 1933, in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Charles and Clarice Richardson. He was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System and graduated from Frederick Douglass High School. He attended Virginia Union University before serving in the United States Army as a Private First Class. He was a Medical Technician, and was honorably discharged.
Sonny loved tennis, racquetball, and roller skating; and was a member of the Baltimore Speed Rollers. It was at a skating event when he was 16 years old that he met the love of his life, Shirley Ann, who preceded him in death. She thought that he was showing off for her on the floor, so she had hoped he would fall on his face for being so cocky!!! They would later marry on January 29, 1956; and of this union three children were born. Sonny worked various jobs before being appointed the first Black Court Clerk in 1968 for the State of Maryland; a position of which he was extremely proud. So much so that he used to swear people in while talking in his sleep!!! He was a devoted member of the All Saints Catholic Church for over 60 years. He was an usher, counted the money from collection, drove the van to transport parishioners, and even sang on the choir and recorded an album with them. He was the first Treasurer for the choir when it ws first formed. Even in death Sonny is still thinking of others. He donated his body to the Anatomy Board in the hopes of saving others.
Sonny left to cherish his memory three children: Donna, Carla!, and Charles III (Chuck); now son-in-law, Mark; one daughter-in-law, Burnette; four grandchildren: Nashira, Geremy, Jordan, and Brooke; one brother, Harold (Popo); one brother-in-law, Ron, one sister-in-law, Francine; and a host of loving relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service was hold on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at the New All Saints Catholic Church.
Shirley Ann Richardson was born on November 5, 1932 to M. Margaret and the late Shirley R. Diggs, in Baltimore, Maryland. God called her home after a battle with Cancer on April 6, 2007, Good Friday.
She was educated in the Baltimore Catholic School System, and later graduated Summa Cum Laude from Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Shirley Ann married her high school sweetheart Charles "Sonny" Richardson; and of this union three beautiful children were born. Sonny worked two jobs so Shirley could stay home and raise their children. Prior to that, she was the third Black female police officer in Baltimore City. When she had to qualify with her firearm, they rolled back the targets, and Shirly had shot on her partner's target next to her! Not hitting her own target once. Amazingly, she went on to become a dedicated officer who was proficient with her weapon. We all enjoyed teasing her about that. We also teased her because years after leaving the force, she could only remember one Judo hold; that she tried on everyone who came in the house. After her kids grew up, Shirley went back to work as the Manager of Square Circle Jewelers for twenty-five years. She loved talking to all types of people. She stopped working after being diagnoses with her illness.
Even in death Shirley is still thinking about others. She decided to donate her body to the Anatomy Board.
Shirley Ann was survived by her loving husband of fifty-one years, Charles "Sonny"; her three bright rays of light-children Donna Maria, Carla! Ann, and Charles "Chuck"; a devoted daughter-in-law, Burnette, adoring future son-in-law Mark Jeter; "adopted daughter-in-love" JerVay Rodgers; four beautiful grandchildren: Nashira, Geremy, Jordan, and Brooke; her mother Margaret; loving brother Ronald; sister-in-law Francine; brother Tyrone; sister Tammie; devoted best friend Henrietts Peterkin; several nieces, nephews, godchildren, cousins, aunts, and uncles.
A Memorial Service was held at St. Jude Shrine on Thursday, April 12, 2007.
